It has been revealed that two of Brisbane's new COVID-19 cases had recently visited Byron Bay throwing Easter holidays into potential chaos on a day when NSW eased restrictions for weddings and funerals.
Jeanette Young Queensland's Chief Health Officer was giving an update on Brisbane's four new locally acquired cases overnight when she added "Then very late last night I was notified of another case who happens to be a nurse working in the Covid ward. She did some shifts there. But I’m not sure that’s where she’s acquired it. We will have to wait for genome sequencing results that we should get back late together or tomorrow morning which will make it clear."
"Her sister is also positive and we are not sure whether the transmission has happened there. Again, we need to wait for genome sequence results ...
They have recently been in Byron Bay during their infectious period. So we now have significant community transmission and significant numbers of venues of concern all through Brisbane and we know that people have moved from Brisbane out into the broader community."
We now wait for a response from NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant and NNSWLHD Chief Executive Wayne Jones.
In the meantime, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has declared greater Brisbane a 'hotspot' that will be locked down from 5 o'clock this afternoon for the next three days leading into the Easter holidays in an attempt to stop community spread.
More to come.
