Lismore, along with the greater Northern Rivers and Tweed areas will be included in a new ‘border bubble’ with Queensland from 1am Monday, September 13.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the news this morning, saying the new border zone will apply to 12 Local Government Areas emerging from lockdown tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 12.01am. Read more: Lismore's lockdown to end, but restrictions still apply
The border zone between Northern NSW and Queensland will ‘revert’ back to how it was the last time it came into effect – allowing essential workers, schools and those with health needs to cross the border under the same restrictions as previously.
Lismore MP Janelle Saffin, who has been involved in the Cross Border Taskforce negotiations, said it was a great relief for local communities who have been affected by the border closure.
“There will be some conditionality, but more details will be released later by the Premier,” Ms Saffin said.
“I’ve been working extremely hard advocating, lobbying and working with colleagues to achieve this.
“It’s just terrific and it shows when we work together we can get great results.”
