Prince Philip dies age 99: Royal Lismore visit 1954

Prince Philip has died aged 99. Confirmation of Prince Philip's death was released with an announcement by Buckingham Palace:

"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

Prince Philip's death will be mourned by many local Northern Rivers residents following a Royal visit to Lismore and Casino in 1954.

The visit took place on Wednesday, February 10 in heavy rain with a large crowd of 50,000 in attendance. The heavy rain was the precursor to the 1954 floods which occurred a week later.

The Queen and Prince Philip stayed at The Gollan Hotel and flew out of the Evans Head Aerodrome.

The Royal visit put Lismore on the national map as news outlets from all over the country ran stories.

This story was from the Barrier Minor in Broken Hill:

QUEEN SEES 50 000 PEOPLE AT LISMORE

Lismore : Fifty thousand -people stood for hours in torrential rain to see the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh make a Royal Progress through Lismore streets today.

The rain stopped a few minutes before the Queen arrived at the local Council Chambers, where the biggest single crowd of 10,000 was waiting to see her receive a

civic welcome.

The people were drenched but happy, and the Queen, realising their discomfort, had a special smile and wave for all.

The rain did not dampen the people's enthusiasm and outside the Council Chambers they sang "You Are My Sunshine," with the rain falling again.

During the presentation of dignitaries the Duke several times held up the proceedings by chatting in friendly fashion with some of the men and women.

The Queen said she "well knew" the contribution Lismore residents were making toward the prosperity of Australia and strengthening of the British Common-

wealth.

"I regret my visit to Lismore must be so short, but I am glad it has enabled me to meet, personally, many more of you who live far away from the capital cities," Her Majesty added.

There was a second visit for Prince Philip to Lismore in 1973 when the Queen opened the Sydney Opera House, Prince Philip came to Lismore and opened the new Lismore High School.
