Detectives from Richmond Police District are calling on residents to remain vigilant after receiving reports of cars being stolen.
In recent weeks, officers from Richmond PD have arrested and charged several people with break-in and motor vehicle theft offences.
Richmond PD Crime Manager, Detective Sergeant Michael Smith, said many thefts and break-ins are opportunistic crimes that can be prevented.
"Break-ins are usually an opportunistic crime, and criminals will target homes and cars with poor security,” Det Sgt Smith said.
"Whether you're out for five minutes or away for a week, you need to secure your home and cars to ensure you're not providing criminals with an easy target."
Det Sgt Smith detailed simple precautions which can be incorporated into personal routines.
"Things like making sure doors and windows are locked and secured. An unlocked door of a home or car full of valuables is an opportunistic thief’s dream.
"When it comes to your car, be sure to take valuables with you, and if you can't, then conceal them in the boot - the glovebox is the first place thieves will look.
"Finally, make sure your keys are secure and never leave a spare set in your vehicle."
Det Sgt Smith said the community has a role to play in reducing crime.
"If you see any suspicious activity around your home or car, or those of your neighbours, make a report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
