Australians will get a one-off public holiday on Thursday, September 22 on the National Day of Mourning.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the holiday during various media interviews this morning.
On the ABC TV Show 'Insiders', The PM said, "It will be a one-off national public holiday. To allow people to pay their respects for the passing of Queen Elizabeth."
"I spoke to all Premiers and Chief Ministers yesterday and I'm writing to them formally this morning, they will have received their letters by now. They have all agreed that it's appropriate that it be a one-off national public holiday."
The PM will fly to London on Thursday for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral on Monday Australian time before flying home on Wednesday with the National Day of Mourning on Thursday and a memorial service the day after.
"There are a lot of protocols here that have been in place for a long time. One of those is that the memorial service be the day after. It will be here in the Great Hall in Parliament House. I've already invited all of the Premiers and Chief Ministers who I spoke to yesterday," PM Albanese said.
The public holiday will be welcome news to the Lismore Turf Club with the 2022 Lismore Cup to be run on Thursday, September 22.
The Lismore City Council councillors had voted not to approve the normal half-day public holiday due to the impact of the February 28 flood has had on local businesses. Now, a full day public holiday has been declared, it is sure to mean a full house at the Lismore Turf Club as retail workers across the Lismore LGA will have the day off.
Following two years of COVID restrictions and also feeling the effects of the flood, the Lismore Turf Club will no doubt welcome the news.
Now, they just need the weather to play its part.
In a statement released by the Prime Minister, Mr Alabanese said, "Over the coming weeks, Australia will continue to commemorate our late Queen."
“I encourage all Australians, wherever you may be, to take time to pause and reflect on Her Majesty’s extraordinary life of service.”
