Lismore Police are investigating a scam where a woman had $10,000 stolen from her account by someone pretending to be from the National Broadband Network (NBN).
“Last month a local lady received a phone call from someone pretending to be from 'the NBN'”, a Richmond District Police Facebook statement said.
“They claimed the woman had compromised files on her computer, and she had to provide her password details.
“The scammer then told the victim to provide her internet banking details, then turn her computer off for a few hours.
“The next day the victim turned her computer back on and checked her online banking.
“She had just under $10,000 withdrawn by the scammer.
“Lismore Police are investigating.
“If you receive a phone call from anyone asking for access to your computer - it's a scam.
“Never share your passwords, especially for online banking.
“Stories like this are all too common on the Northern Rivers.
“To help combat internet fraud Richmond Police District hold fraud prevention seminars for social groups.
