Paul McLean and sons play together for Workers in Hooker League winPaul McLean with sons Rory, 13, and Sam, 17, as Lismore workers won their second successive match in the Hooker League.

Paul McLean, the coach of Lismore Workers Cricket Club's LJ Hooker League side, is always watchings his sons play cricket.

But due to high school graduations and injuries, Paul McLean found himself on the same side as 17-year-old Sam and 13-year-old Rory for the first time as Workers hosted Byron Bay in a Round 6 clash at Nielson Park.

With Workers' Hooker League wicketkeeper Nathan Bezrouchko absent due to the formal for Year 12 St John's College, Woodlawn, the club called up Rory who keeps wicket in Second Grade. Paul then offered to play with the club struggling for numbers with Zac Ewing also at the same formal and Brady Toniello injured. Gus Legoe also answered the call and played his first game of the season.

"It was a wonderful moment to play with both Sam and Rory. Good fun. I had played with Rory in Second Grade the previous Saturday but never with the two of them in the Hooker League," said Paul McLean.

"They are confident kids, they back themselves."

His boys did not let him down as Sam took three wickets for 30 runs with his leg spin and debutant Rory, a wicketkeeper, took the first catch offered when opening bowler Lachlan Burrows induced a snick from Byron Bay's opener Cameron Daniels for the first wicket. Even their dad took a wicket, rolling back the years, with his third ball.

"Rory kept really well and it was quite funny out there to see Rory, who is 5ft tall and weighs 36kg, and see him keep to Sam, who is 6ft 4inches," said Paul McLean, who spoke as he watched Rory play in an Under 14s match at Casino.

Lachlan Burrows had an exceptional match for Lismore Workers taking the first four wickets to fall and had the superb figures of 4/21 off eight overs. McLean took 3/30 with his leg spin and captain Anthony MacDonald, seam bowler Josh Boyd, also making his first start in Hooker League this season, and Paul McLean took a wicket each.

Byron Bay, who won the toss and elected to bat, were bowled out for 160 after the last wicket put on 38.

Workers needed exactly four runs an over to win.

"Matty Geyer was seeing the ball well, hitting four 4s but was out for 24 in the 5th over. Sam batted well before being out before drinks for 29," said MacDonald.

"We lost two quick wickets after drinks which had us 4/106 before Hamish Clacher was put in and scored a rapid fire 43 with two 4s and five 5 6s, finishing the game with consecutive sixes. It took all the shine off Lachlan’s 36 not out, who had batted very well coming in at number three."

Lachlan Burrows had a fine match for Workers, taking the first four wickets and then holding the innings together with 36 not out.

The sixth wicket win was the second on the trot for Workers after four defeats to start the season.

"We had a pretty tough draw to start with - Cudgen, Lennox Head, Pottsville and Casino are in the top six," said McLean. "I believe you learn from losing and the side has responded well," said Paul McLean.
