NR's Reconstruction Commission will be announced at 9

There will be much welcome news for flood survivors this morning when the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Commission will be announced by Premier Dominic Perrottet and Deputy Premier Paul Toole at 9 o'clock at Southern Cross University.

Local Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin has been championing the cause for some weeks as former Lismore City Council General Manager Shelley Oldham led a petition to form the commission that attracted 18,900 signatures. The Lismore App believes over 14,000 of those were from the Lismore LGA. Lismore City Councillor Darlene Cook gave the petition support through an urgency motion at last weeks LCC meeting.

The commission will support all the Northern Rivers affected by the devastating 14.4 metre flood on February 28, 2022 and will be headed by David Witherdin. Mr Witherdin is head of the Public Works Advisory and Soil Conservation Service.

Ms Saffin said that the newly formed reconstruction commission won't begin until 1 July, 2022 which is 10 weeks away. The reason why the start date is so far away will be asked at the Premier's press conference.

It is understood the term will be between 3 and 5 years with no dollar value attached at this stage.

More details following the Premier's press conference on the Lismore App.
