In just under two weeks, Lismore will have an influx of visitors as the Northern Rivers Vintage & Veteran Car Club holds a 5-day rally to mark its 60th year of continuous operation.
Sixty-six vintage & veteran cars will arrive in Lismore ready for the rally to begin on Wednesday, August 16 and finish on Sunday, August 20.
Car lovers should make a calendar note for Friday, August 18, when people can view the beautifully restored and maintained cars at John Crowther Car Park between 8:30am and 11am.
There will be a second chance at the Lismore Farmer's Markets on Saturday, August 19 between 8:30am and 10am.
Northern Rivers Vintage & Veteran Car Club member Robert Lovell told the Lismore App thirty-four (52%) of the cars were manufactured prior to December 1930.
"The oldest is a 1909 Renault plus a number of cars built between 1910 and 1916."
"The youngest is a 1989 Jensen Interceptor, plus there will be Torana's, Holden's and Falcon's," Robert said.
Celebrating 60 years of continuous operation in Lismore was supposed to happen in 2020, the club was founded in 1960. However, Covid put a stop to that plan as the February big flood put a stop to any plans for 2022.
"This has been three years in the making! We are two weeks away, and it is still looking good at this stage," Robert mused with hope in his voice.
All of Lismore and the Northern Rivers will benefit as the club makes its way to different venues each day as part of the rally.
"During the 5-day runs, the rally will visit Coraki and Evans Head on Thursday, Summerland Farm at Alstonville on Friday, the hinterland behind Byron Bay and Ballina on Saturday and Rocky Creek Dam for Sunday morning tea, finishing with a lunch at the Lismore showgrounds."
"We have people from all over Queensland coming to Lismore and a few from the south like Port Macquarie."
"We've got some really beautiful countryside to show the Car Club members through lush rainforests and over creeks," Robert said.
"This is a rare opportunity to see a number of very old historic vehicles in one place including an old 1913 Morris Oxford, you seldom see one on the road these days."
The Northern Rivers Vintage and Veteran Car Club will be in Lismore from Wednesday, August 16 until Sunday, August 20.
