Local not-for-profit railway companies have been granted licenses by UGL and Transport for NSW to clear the tracks and conduct degradation studies.
These stretch from Lismore through Bangalow, Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, Billinudgel and up to Yelgun, at the top of Byron Shire (where Splendour and the Falls Festivals are held).
Northern Rivers Rail is looking for supporters of the return of train services to Byron and Lismore Shires to volunteer and help make this happen.
The group said in a statement, "Go to: www.northernriversrail.com.au to apply, to help clear our railway tracks in the next few months, or if you would like to donate towards bringing train services back, or to fill in our survey.
"Thanks to everyone who believes we can have a win-win: train services next to a bike/walking path!"
"We are working hard to create an off-road climate-friendly train service, using best practice renewable energy solutions, in the Byron and Lismore Shires, to benefit the whole community."
"Join with us, to be part of the solution: for less traffic and better social, economic and environmental outcomes in our region."
"Towards a rail based, integrated public transport system throughout the Northern Rivers."
