The peaceful sounds of a typical Lismore Sunday will be broken by the sounds of over 80 motorbikes rumbling through Lismore and the CBD. Don't be alarmed, it is for a very worthy cause.
Local motorbike group North Coast Riders will be riding into town this Sunday (December 3) on their annual Toy Run delivering Christmas toys to Rebekka Battista for Our Kids.
The toy run was run by the Ulysses Club for 38 years before COVID interrupted the tradition which has now been taken on by North Coast Riders since 2021.
North Coast Riders member and organiser Jillian Challinor told the Lismore App there were 70-80 bikes on its first run before a drizzly day in 2022 saw about 55 take part.
"We are expecting a record number of bikes this year. People want to get involved because life is still so hard for a lot of people."
"It's nice to share a little bit of joy, it makes people smile."
This is not just any motorbike ride donating toys, members go all out to decorate their bikes and make it as festive as possible with one member playing Christmas carols out of his bike.
"The donated toys are strapped to the bikes along with tinsel, Santa Claus, Merry Christmas signs, decorated helmets and more," Jillian said.
Jillian says anyone can still donate toys and join the ride on Sunday.
Toys can be donated between 9:30am and 10:30am at the Maritime Museum on Regatta Avenue in Ballina this Sunday or can be dropped off at the Hotel Metropole, which is the final destination for the North Coast Riders when they meet Rebekka Battista for the handover.
"Anything that is transportable is most welcome," Jillian said, "soft toys, bricks or blocks as an example. We can't accept anything dangerous for children, toys that can be swallowed for example."
Alstonville residents can watch the colourful bikes ride along Ballina Road, Main Street, Bugden Avenue and Lismore Road. The toy run continues along Ballina Road before turning right down Rotary Drive to travel past the Lismore Base Hospital ending at the Met's car park at the back of the hotel.
Our Kids Rebekka Battista said the toys end up at Lismore Base Hospital to give to kids that end up in hospital or accident emergency.
"This just puts a little sunshine into their world during a difficult time. They are really surprised and the parents are so thrilled that the community thinks of kids at that time. It is totally unexpected."
The North Coast Riders Toy Run will leave Ballina at 10:30am this Sunday (December 3) via Alstonville and ending at the Hotel Metropole at around 11:30am.
