Weed removal and rainforest restoration has been part of work of Nimbin Environment Centre for some time – and a new grant from the Federal Government will help the good work continue.
Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan said the volunteers at the centre had been working to protect native plants in the Mulgum Creek Rainforest by removing infestations of high priority weeds.
The Centre’s Mulgum Creek Rainforest Restoration tackles the upper reaches of Mulgum Creek, which has “significant” infestations of seeded banana, giant devil fig, privet and maderia vine.
Part of the process of weed removal involves volunteers drilling and poisoning mature woody weed species and hand weeding seedlings.”
“They centre wants to continue this work and remove more weeds, so it was great to announce $10,000 to support the project,” Mr Hogan said.
““Environmental weeds are a serious threat to the health of our waterways and the management of exotic weed species will help native plants and animals.”
