New trial for safe disposal of embedded batteries, including vapes

Lismore City Council Community Recycling Centre (CRC) is participating in a two-year NSW government trial to help residents safely dispose of embedded batteries.

An embedded battery is placed permanently within an item, often with no easy way of being removed and is found in a growing number of portable and often rechargeable items.

When your battery is at the end of its life, bring these items FREE of charge to the CRC at the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre on Wyrallah Road.

Here’s what can be accepted:

  • Bluetooth speakers and headphones
  • Electric toothbrushes
  • E-scooters, e-bikes and hoverboards
  • Flashing/light up toys – particularly wands or other hard plastic products
  • Personal care devices (eg. shavers)
  • Powerpacks and portable charging devices
  • Remote-controlled and ride-on toys
  • Vacuum cleaners (cordless, hand-held and robotic)
  • Vapes
  • Wearable devices such as smart watches, trackers and medical aids

And why is this trial important? These embedded batteries, made mostly of highly combustible lithium-ion, have been causing an increasing number of fires in bins, waste trucks and landfills, so we need to find better ways to dispose of these items and recycle their components.
