Construction of a new raised pedestrian crossing is planned to begin in mid-November near the corner of Byron Street and Ashton Street in Bangalow.

Isabella Avelino Gianelli, Council’s Project Engineer, said that the new crossing will create a safer passage for pedestrians and bicycle riders as they walk or ride across Byron Street. 

“At the moment, people wanting to cross to the other side of Byron Street have to negotiate not only traffic on the main road but also be aware of traffic coming out of Ashton Street,” Ms Avenlino Gianellli said. 

“By building this crossing, it will make it much safer for pedestrians and provide a better connection for people going from town or Piccabeen Park and onto the Bangalow Sports Fields or beyond.

“This project was identified in 2019 as part of the 10-Year Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP).

“After completing investigation work, we realised it could not be an underpass as originally hoped, but we are looking forward to delivering this important road safety project,” she said.

During construction:

• Byron Street will be reduced to one lane and will operate under traffic control. Please expect delays.
• Ashton Street will be closed to outbound traffic.
• Working hours will be from 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
• Traffic control and signage will be in place. Construction of the new pedestrian crossing will take a month to complete (weather permitting).

The project is funded by NSW Government’s Safer Roads program.
