Mullumbimby residents are being asked to conserve water as the town’s water treatment plant remains offline.
The Mullumbimby water treatment plant has not been able to produce clean drinking water since severe weather and heavy rain caused high levels of turbidity in the raw water supply at Lavertys Gap Weir.
The town’s emergency connection to the Rous County Council regional water supply is in use and supplying water to the eastern part of Mullumbimby but is not able to support the entire town.
Mullumbimby residents are urged to limit water use to essential drinking, cooking and hygiene to slow the drawdown of current supplies in the town’s reservoirs.
People in Mullumbimby are asked not to use tap water for external cleaning purposes and hosing driveways at the moment.
Tap water is safe to drink and storage levels in Mullumbimby's reservoirs are being monitored.
Council staff are monitoring water conditions at Lavertys Gap Weir and will resume water production as soon as possible.
Water supplies in other parts of Byron Shire are not affected, however residents are asked to use water with care as demand is expected to increase as post-storm cleanup work continues.
