Mixed results in Rugby preseason

Local rugby union clubs had mixed results across the weekend in their last hit out before the 2023 Far North Coast Rugby Union Competition kicks off.

On Friday night, the SCU Gold Rats took on Lennox Head at Maurie Ryan Oval in their second preseason match.

The club has reformed and rejoined the FNC Rugby Union competition this season, entering the Presidents Cup grade and hoping to also register junior teams this year.

In a tight battle, the Gold Rats managed to wrestle a close 21-15 victory over the Trojans who surprisingly have dropped out of the First Grade competition, after being a powerhouse club across many years.

The Lismore Rugby Club headed south for a preseason hit out against the Grafton Redmen before starting the season in a fortnight.

In a good hit out for the Greens, they eventually went down 36-5 in a physical clash. Joey Davis was the only Lismore player to cross the line but the coaching staff saw plenty of positive things to come out of the match and look forward to working towards the first competition match on Saturday 15 April.

Lismore will travel to Wollongbar to take on the Pioneers which will be a good test of where the side, and club is going into the season, with the Pioneers being a force in recent years.
