Minor Flood Warning issued by the BOM for tomorrowCouncil workers closing levee gates this evening

The levee gates are closed and the lower car parks in the CBD already closed as Council prepare for minor flooding in the CBD following a Minor Flood Warning from the Bureau of Meteorology.

The warning comes after yesterday's deluge in the Wilsons River catchment areas increasing the river levels throughout the day prompting the BOM to issue the warning.

The Wilsons River is expected to exceed the minor flood level (4.20 m) tonight with predictions the river level may reach around 5.00 metres Tuesday afternoon. Of course, this is dependent on how much rain we receive in the next 24-hours from the westerly trough that takes over from the coastal trough of the last few days.

Motorists are advised not to park their vehicles in low-lying areas around Dawson Street and Uralba Street and CBD businesses affected by the pre-Christmas flash flood are advised to be ready to move equipment, vehicles and stock to higher ground.

Residents are urged to monitor conditions and be prepared for potential flash flooding while Police and Lismore's SES Unit are reminding motorists not to drive through floodwaters.

The BOM rainfall forecast has increased throughout today with 50-80mm now predicted to hit our region tomorrow. If we receive the same 79mm like on Sunday then the flood levels will rise higher than the minor indicators. Hence the Lismore City Council's preparations with the levee gates.

The highest rainfall to 9am Monday was at Nashua with 198mm.

The BOM is still forecasting this weather pattern to clear by Wednesday when we are likely to see blue skies and sunny days into the weekend to help dry out our sodden ground.
