Marist Brothers juniors meet GC Titans star Brian Kelly and pose with NRL Premiership trophies

While most of NSW was dealing with the State Budget and El Nino finally being declared by the Bureau of Meteorology, a group of junior rugby league players and fans travelled to Oakes Oval yesterday afternoon to meet a local NRL star and have a photo taken with the two NRL Premiership trophies.

The Marist Brothers Junior Rugby League Club season has ended, but their interest in the NRL final series, meeting local Gold Coast Titan centre Brian Kelly and being put through their paces.

Brian was born at Lismore Base Hospital but grew up in Ballina.

"I played a lot of footy against Marist Brothers. I am pretty sure I counted more wins than losses," Brian laughed, "I've got plenty of good memories up here and coming back home to the Northern Rivers area means a lot."

"It's good to jump in and run around with the kids. Hopefully, this will inspire them to one day follow in our footsteps or just in general to have a crack at footy or education and go as far as they believe they can."

As we know, the attention span of young kids can be challenging, so did they follow Brian's advice?

At the start, they did, and then they tend to throw their own little spin on things. That's cool, it's good," he laughs again.

"I see myself in the little kids running around, so it's good to get back give back to the game that I've been playing since I was five."

President of Marist Brothers Junior Rugby League Gary Allen was a happy man too, as Telstra donated tackling bags, NRL balls, bump pads and training equipment to the club.

"Thanks to Tesltra for donating this wonderful gear. We can't wait to get back into our footy training again."

"It's fantastic to see the kids come down. Footy season's over, but they have come down to mix with some NRL players and do some drills with some NRL representatives as well. You can see the excitement on their faces."

"This is the perfect way to finish the season with the NRL trophies here, NRL and NRLW, and the Grand Finals are only two games away."
