Marist Brothers Gold Under-14s deserved Minor and Major PremiersMarist Brothers Gold Under 14s won the Miner and Major Premiership.

Marist Brothers Gold Under 14 side defied their Lismore Workers counterparts and the weather to be crowned Premiers at Hepburn Park, Goonellabah, last Saturday.

"I was surprised we got on," said Dennis Rose, Marist Brothers Gold Under 14s' coach. "There was rain around, so the advice was to hit the ball hard in case the players had to come off and the match shortened."

Captain Hamish Weekes, who is playing in the Northern Rivers Cricket League Second Grade final tomorrow, showed the way as opener with three boundaries and three sixes.

His opening partner Sean Thorneycroft was far more patient and hit a season high, 53 not out, which was the highest score of the match.

When Weekes' fell, Matt keys hit two sixes to hurry the score along and Lachlan O'Sullivan hit 28, with four boundaries, as Brother Gold made 5/176 off 30 overs.

It was an imposing score but, as Rose said, Lismore Workers Under 14s possessed some promising young players, in particular Rory McLean and Will Brown.

"The game changed in our favour when Jack Mcfadden's off spin had McLean stumped by Tobey Rose," said Rose.

"Then Tobey took off his pads and, with a Rashid Khan style quick leg spin, took two wickets for three runs."

All 11 Marist Brothers Gold players bowled as Workers finished well short of the target at 8/122.

Marist Brothers Gold Under 14s secured the Minor Premiership with a last round win over Lismore Workers, and Rose said it was a pleasure to coach the side.

"There was good effort frome players and some are pretty handy," he said.

It completed a great day in the drizzle as Marist Brothers Gold Under 12s also won the Major Premiership.

Marist Brothers Gold Under 14s: Hamish Weekes (captain), Sean Thorneycroft, Matt Keys, Lachlan O'Sullivan, Tobey Rose (wicketkeeper), Harrison Scheibel, Tom Molloy, Mitchell Mayes, Connor McLucas, Laura Parsons, Nate Doolan and Jack Mcfadden.
