As many golfers prepare to hit the course for their Saturday morning competitions, a group of locals hit the Casino Golf Course last Monday for a charity golf day of a different kind, the Longest Day.

The Longest Day is an endurance golf marathon designed to test your skill, strength, and stamina. The challenge is to successfully complete your chosen number of holes from dawn to dusk and raise funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention, and support services.

The event has not got a high profile in Lismore but Ken McPherson would like to change that.

Ken moved to the Northern Rivers in March this year to work for Lismore Toyota and put a team of four together for last Monday's Longest Day.

You had the choice of:

  •  The Long Day - 36 holes (2 rounds)
  •  The Longer Day - 54 holes (3 rounds)
  •  Or the ultimate challenge: The Longest Day - 72 holes (4 rounds)

The team at Lismore Toyota Ken McPherson, Graeme Costello, Dan Wild and Thomas Vantaggiota competed and completed the longest day golf challenge raising over $3,000 in the process for the Cancer Council.

Sarah Smith Principal of Lismore Toyota said "Cancer has touched most of our lives in some way and in some form. The work the Cancer Council does is invaluable to those suffering from cancer and their loved ones. I am happy to get behind them and incredibly proud of our boys for playing 72 holes in one day."

Ken McPherson said it was a tough tough day on the body, "We crammed 16 hours of golf into 12 hours, starting at 6:15am and finishing at 6:15pm."

"We all pulled up pretty sore, your legs, back and especially fingers from holding the club but it is a small price to pay to raise money for the cancer patients and their families," Ken added.

"We started with a two-person ambrose then moved to a four-ball ambrose to finish the day. I want to say a big thank you to the Casino Golf Club who donated carts, sandwiches, drinks and $500."

"The team would like to thank everyone that sponsored them, particularly the Casino Golf Club, Lismore Toyota, the Casino Roadhouse, Casino Fitness and Plateau Pools."

Ken is hoping next year to encourage more local teams to get involved in the Longest Day event and help raise money for this amazing charity.
