A local bus driver has been caught using his mobile phone whilst driving students home from school.
Grace Cahill told the Lismore App that her son, who attends Richmond River High School, took photos and recorded the bus driver in a video showing the bus in motion while he was talking on his mobile phone holding it to his ear.
When asked this made her feel, "Angry, really angry," she replied," Even more so when they called me on Monday (May 15) to tell me he'd only received an official written warning about the incident. That's when I decided to speak to police and you."
It is understood officers from the Richmond Police District forwarded the video to Highway Patrol and the bus driver was fined and given 5 demerit points.
Grace said she was not the only parent outraged at the incident, "At least two other parents commented on the (social media) post and several inbox me privately that he had done this. I’m working this evening with a young gentleman who was on the bus that day as well."
The bus driver in question works for the Northern Rivers Buslines. The Lismore App made contact and received the following statement:
“A Northern Rivers Buslines driver was recently charged with using a mobile phone whilst driving a vehicle. Apart from being charged for this offence, this driver concluded further refresher training on our Mobile Phone Policy and Digital Communications Policy which was also confirmed by the NSW Police.
"Northern Rivers Buslines takes safety very seriously and will work closely with all staff to ensure our services are delivered with total safety and compliance. Northern Rivers Buslines management cooperated fully with NSW Police on this matter”.
