Sport at the elite level is all about winning but at the amateur level if you can't laugh when you get beat week in, week out then you might as well chuck it in.

The Lismore Swans' Women's side, who have won back-to-back Premierships, are having a poor season but they always have a laugh. The Swanettes only win was in Round 1 back on Saturday, April 6 and they turned at Byron Bay Sports Complex to play the leaders of the QWFANR league. The weather was shocking, it was raining hard.

"As a group we spoke honestly about we needed from the women. With the help of a couple of senior men and the men's coach Joey Mitchell, I'm pretty sure the women took everything in," said the Swanettes assistant coach Salvatore Scholl.

"A few of the women had also been batting cold and flu symptoms through the week. But they turned up ready to go. With heavy rain in the lead up to the game the field was a giant paddle of water and mud, the things kids dream of playing in. The game plan was there was no game plan. Contest the ball and want it. Do your best and play hard. Try and hold the ball as best you can."

The first quarter seemed to have the ball stuck in the mud but Byron Magpies were first on the board with two goals, while The Swanettes kicked one behind.

"Maddie Stewart was moved into the ruck for the day and did not let us down. With a couple of clearances in the second quarter the girls finally got into Byron's 50. Alyssa Pidgeon, players' player in the defeat against Tweed Coast, got a free kick in front of their goal. She banged it through for her first goal for the season. It was a celebration for the entire team.

At half-time Byron Magpies were ahead by three goals but the Swanettes were not going to surrender despite the awful conditions that you wouldn't take a dog out in.

""Everyone was loving the wet and a heavy ripped through at the start of the second half, adding to the fun on the day," said Scholl.

"The third quarter belonged to Byron. But the Lismore Swanettes' Georgina Morris, Emma Stoddart, Zoe Goodsell, Talarra Berry, Samantha Knight (who was celebrating her birthday) and Stella Allen made it hard for Byron and made them earn the two goals they got.

"At the start of the fourth quarter the women got into a huddle and screamed and yelled. It was a sign they were ready to give it their all and finish the game off well.

"With some great heavy tackling from Maggie Riley, Alissa McWhirter, Lilli Hutchings, Raycee Kaimauna Cooke and Ruby Armbruster, our midfield feed off it and the ever reliable Rebecca Brooks, Laura Cahill, Maggie Riley and Stella Allen ran a bit more freely.

"A great run down the middle from Laura and then a kick to a beautiful leading Ruby Armbruster. She grabbed the mark, steadied and gave the girls their goal of the match."

Byron Magpies won the match 5.4.34 to Lismore Swanettes 2.1.13.

"Maddie Stewart was regarded with her second players' player of the match award and Stella Allen grabbed the coach's award," said Scholl.

"At the end of the game, the women made sure they enjoyed the conditions once more with a Team Swan dive into one of the bigger puddles near the field. You have got to love them all."

There are only five rounds left and the Swanettes are 16 points behind Tweed Coast in third.

The Swanettes make the trip to Fripp Oval to take on second placed Ballina on Saturday.
