There are nine weeks until the 2023 Elders Love Lismore Show lights up the Lismore Showgrounds.
After last year's record crowds, large numbers are expected to surge through the gates once again to enjoy traditional show features like cattle, chickens and show jumping, plus crowd-drawing events like:
Through a number of state and federal grants, the Lismore Showground has been a hive of activity since April as roads have been fixed near the Farmers Markets and two new kitchen areas were updated.
The road work improvements are again in full swing at the eastern end where the main gates are situated, plus Norma's Kitchen, under the western grandstand, has been totally gutted and is being rebuilt by Joel Jensen Constructions.
Secretary of the North Coast National A&I Society Mark Sollom said it had been a while since the roads had been resurfaced.
"They were last done in 1974. So, they've stood up pretty well since then, but we have to do it to current specifications, which takes an awful lot more work than just digging a light pan out, putting some wire down and pouring concrete over the top."
"This is pretty serious stuff done to Lismore City Council specifications. They're digging down in some places about 60 centimetres or more, so it will last for another 50 or 60 years."
"Importantly, these works will vastly improve the drainage. Water will get away from here very quickly."
In order to get the renovations completed by Show Day, everybody is working overtime.
"We got the permission to start on Norma's Kitchen last Friday afternoon, so we tore all of the stuff out of there, all the equipment and fridges and things like that over that weekend. Joel Jensen started work demolishing on Monday."
"We're getting a new concrete floor in the kitchen so that when the next flood comes through, we'll just have to hose it out."
The grants don't stop there, as the public grandstand will be refurbished.
"We're just waiting to hear from Public Works about the flood refurbishment money. The idea is to reskin the grandstand to make sure it lasts another 100 years," Mark said.
With all the work happening, Mark Sollom is confident everything will be ready for Thursday, October 19 to Saturday, October 21.
"The show is coming together. We've booked most of the entertainment. We've got a big lead act coming on Friday night, which we'll be announcing soon."
Even when pressed, Mark remained tight-lipped.
Lismore and the Northern Rivers can be sure that this year's Elders Love Lismore Show will be one not to be missed.
