Lismore score two Premierships as underdogs

Lismore Rugby Club have claimed to Premierships in Far North Coast, with both teams going into their deciders as underdogs.

In the first match of the day, the Lismore Colts went into the match against Minor Premiers Lennox Head, with plenty of confidence.

And it paid off, with Lismore scoring after just 8 minutes, with a try to Daniel Davis in the left corner, which was followed shortly after with a nearly identical try to Hayden Sivewright, which was converted by Kody McQuilty for an early 12-0 lead.

Lennox began to settle and had the better of the territory to end the first half, resulting in a late try, before a Lismore penalty goal on the bell saw the halftime score 15-5.

A poor restart 7 minutes into the second half gifted Lennox another 5 pointer, reducing the margin to 15-10, but it was another McQuilty penalty goal that pushed the margin out to a safe 18-10 victory for Lismore.

The Women's 10's match had a similar background, with Casino losing only one match for the season and dominating the season to take the Minor Premiership.

Lismore were again the underdogs but started solidly, with tries to Shontali Williams and Madison Coppola to race to a 12-0 lead, which they held until halftime.

Lotti Coppola scored shortly after the break to see Lismore out to what looked like a winning lead, before Madison scored her second try to see the Greens up 22-0.

Casino scored two consolation tries late in the second half but it was Lismore again standing tall to take the win and Major Premiership.

Wollongbar Alstonville dominated the Reserve Grade decider 53-10, before their First Grade side took on the Casuarina Beach Barbarians.

In a fitting Grand Final, the second half produced several lead changes before several penalty goals saw the Pioneers take the title 31-28 in the finals seconds.
