Lismore nurse to be arrested in Canberra today

Lismore registered nurse Daisy Nutty, 48, is occupying the roof of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association in Canberra this morning and intends to be arrested and likely face court tomorrow.

Along with several other activists on the roof and blocking traffic outside the building, she intends to refuse bail and go to prison, in order to enforce our government to act on its legal ‘Duty of Care’ to future generations.

As parliament commences its Winter sitting, Extinction Rebellion is demanding the Federal Government drop its appeal against the Federal Court ruling that it owes a ‘Duty of Care’ to protect Australia's children. Instead of stepping up to her responsibility as Environment Minister, Sussan Ley is appealing a finding by Federal Court Justice Bromberg that she owes a duty of care to protect children from the harmful effects of climate change.

Ms Nutty believes her action is necessary because time is running out. “I have pledged to my niece and nephew and all future generations to save koalas and all life from extinction,” she said.

“My profession as a Registered Nurse first brought me to Australia in 2002 from the north of England. I was attracted to a better lifestyle, the amazing wildlife and diversity of land and communities.”

“A better world is possible; look how we pulled together globally for the pandemic,” she continued. “I will passionately protect the planet until my dying day.”
