Lismore Flash Mob to show the world 'we are still here'

If you’ve never been part of a Flash Mob before, then your chance is coming this Saturday, October 1.

All you need to do is wear one colour and show up at the Magellan Street rainbow crosswalk at 11am and dance with a mob of others, all wearing block colours.

Organiser Donna Walker said the ‘rainbow’ flash mob is all about getting people into town to see and meet each other again – and have a lot of fun.

We are still here

“We want to dance and show the wider community that we are still here,” Donna said. “We will film the flash mob and put it on Youtube – and show the world we are battling away after the floods, but we are still here.”

Donna said the idea for the public dance and show of colour began when she was at a Lismore café and saw a love heart.

It’s all you need

“Someone has written ‘it’s all you need’ and I thought, Lismore needs this – and the flash mob evolved from there.

“It’s a family friendly and inclusive for everyone to cut loose and have some fun - all genders and species are welcome – bring your puppy dogs, children and roller skates too.

“We ask that people arrive wearing one colour – like all blue or red.

“We will organise people into colours and create a human rainbow on the crosswalk, then dance, hop, skip, run, twirl, roll, crawl as one mob to the ‘you are here’ hands on Carrington Street.

“The theme song will be ‘All you need is love’.”

Flooded homes

Donna, like many others is still living in her flooded house in North Lismore.

“I still don’t have power upstairs,” she said. “Lots of people, like me, are still not living in first world conditions –make do houses.

“We also worry that the next rain might be the next flood.

“It’s also hard to find a rental – especially if you have pets, like my family does.

Ongoing support

“I want Australia not to forget we are still here and need ongoing support.

“We need to push government to make decisions on how they can help us – and we also need to know if they won’t help us with house or land buybacks.

Fun

“But we want to do it in a fun way, so come to the flash mob and bring streamers, plushies, wigs and dress up crazy and have fun.

“You can also pack a picnic lunch to eat at the Quad afterwards.”
