One of Lismore's oldest wooden buildings, the Lismore City Bowling Club is reopening for business today on Molesworth Street, behind the Historical Society.
Built in 1916, the old building has withstood many a flood and even the record 14.4 metre February flood with fast-flowing water did not move this hardwood framed building a centimetre of its footings. As the saying goes, 'they don't build them like they used to'.
This is not to say that everything is completely rebuilt and operational inside the Lismore Bowlo, as it is affectionately known, it is still a long way from operating at 100% capacity.
As with a lot of businesses that have reopened, the club needs cash through the door to start to fix up the rest of their operation. The Lismore Bowlo is no exception.
President Bob Johnson told the Lismore App, "There is a lot of things to be finished yet. As you can see the floor hasn't been sanded and polished near the bar."
Then when you take a walk at the back of Bowlo to the kitchen and office area you can see what needs to be done when some cash starts coming being generated, the walls are down to the frames with equipment needing to be replaced before any in-house catering takes place.
"We have to prove that we're a viable operation," Bob explained, "before we can apply for some grants."
The good news is the carpet is new, the chairs and tables are ready for patrons, the new blinds were being installed and the rustic bar is ready to start serving beer and wine.
So, for an after work drink pop into the Lismore Bowling Club from 3pm Wednesday's to Saturdays with Happy Hour 4:30pm to 6:30pm Thursday and Friday with beer, wine and bubbles for $4.50. The club opens today.
You can rock up for some free barefoot bowls where the club will supply the bowls and the mats. On Sunday 26 November, there will be a 'Beats and Bowls' day where you can bowl to music.
The future vision for the Lismore Bowling Club is looking good with an outdoor beer garden when the kitchen reopens.
Bob did want to thank the Campsie RSL Club in Sydney for their generous donations of the table and chairs, large screen TV, the cold food display unit.
It was purely by chance that Sharon Pepper was at the Goonellabah Sports Club at the same time as people from the Campsie RSL, a conversation was had and the donations arrived.
In another wonderful display of generosity, a "guy" from Tasmania is raising money to sheet out the back rooms in the kitchen and office areas. When he has raised a few thousand dollars he and a carpenter mate will travel to Lismore to complete the job.
The generosity from all around the country in Lismore's time of need is still very evident.
Now, it is time for locals to share the love and enjoy a drink or two and maybe some barefoot bowls at the Lismore Bowling Club.
With Christmas only seven (7) weeks away there are 200 leg hams to be won and $1000 cash thanks to more generous donations, this time from Three Little Butchers on Wyrallah Road supplying the hams.
Parking is back at the front of the Bowling Club or at the back via Anzac Close off Molesworth Street. Don't let the rough back road fool you, it can be driven to find a parking spot.
The Lismore City Bowling Club is at 171A Molesworth Street, at the back of the Historical Society. It is open Wednesday to Sunday with operating hours Wednesday to Friday from 3pm, Saturday from 12pm and Sunday from 1pm. Food trucks will be available on certain days as well as sandwiches and snacks inside.
The Bowlo is looking for newer younger members which is only $11 per year.
