One of Australia's oldest charities, Legacy, celebrates its 100-year centenary with a torch relay through Lismore this Friday, 23 June.
The torch stops at all 45 Legacy Clubs worldwide, with the Northern Rivers the starting location for the New South Wales torch relay route.
The relay began during ANZAC Day in Pozieres, France. It has travelled to London and will continue its tour throughout Australia.
Far North Coast Legacy Club President Narelle Scott said our community has an opportunity to watch the torch travel through Lismore.
"The New South Wales relay officially starts in Casino at approximately 8 am, which it then makes its way to Lismore at approximately 10.30 am," she said.
"The walk will start at Totem Forest, on the corner of Dawson and Uralba streets and make its way down Woodlark Street, where the walk will turn towards the Memorial Baths on Molesworth Street."
"They will unveil a plaque commemorating the 100 years of service."
Narelle also said people are welcome to watch the walk and donate to Legacy during the relay.
"During the ceremony at the Memorial Baths, there will be opportunities for the public to purchase merchandise at the stand or donate to our collection buckets," she said.
In addition to celebrating 100 years of Legacy, the torch relay is a 6-month campaign to pay homage and acknowledge veterans' families, saluting their sacrifice.
The torch will travel over 50,000 km through 100 stops, carried by approximately 1,500 Torch Bearers to raise over $10 million.
Narelle also said that our region has families that Legacy supports.
"We have families we assist who suffer the consequences of isolation, or to help educate veterans families with schooling who suffer from PSTD," she said.
