Lantern Parade a luminous sellout

Lismore's 27th Annual Lantern Parade was a sellout success on Saturday with all 5000 tickets sold.

A day of events in the winter sunshine and a crisp clear evening brought locals and audience from further afield together at the Lismore Showground which culminated in the evening parade.

Lack of street lighting became one of the advantages of the new location away from our CBD, allowing the lanterns to glow brighter against the natural darkness of the night backdrop.

Despite some opposition to the new venue of the showground and some debate between local agitators and Lightenupinc who produce the parade, the community turned out to make the best of the grandstand seating and embraced the new format of the event.

Producer Jyllie Jackson said "it was incredibly challenging, every year we've had to adapt it in some major way."

Jyllie told the Lismore App she doesn't know at this stage if next year's parade will be at the showground.

"Doing it there was beyond our control but we really appreciate the support we got from the Speedway staff and the North Coast National, especially Mark Sollom the secretary," she said.

She added, "We're such a small crew, we'd like for more people to come and help out."

Public feedback has been positive about the night and while some people found the cold weather challenging, Ms Jackson said that many audience members were "amazed to see the whole parade in one go."

The LightenupInc team would like to extend a big thank you to all the volunteers, stallholders and everyone who braved the midwinter night.

"To see the community coming together, and such incredible diversity, was magical." Ms Jackson said.

There is still some tidying up work to do so any spare hands would be welcome tommorrow – Tuesday - at the showground from 10am.
