Kevin Hogan claims victory in the seat of Page

The National Party's Kevin Hogan has claimed victory in the seat of Page in the 2022 Federal Election.

Mr Hogan was one of the few LNP candidates to have a swing towards him in this election, a remarkable feat considering the LNP has clearly lost the confidence of the voting public across the nation. Mr Hogan's swing was 2% and with 53% of the vote counted he holds a two-party-preferred lead of 61.3% to 38.7% to Labor's Patrick Deegan.

There was some caution that Independent Hanabeth Luke may have finished second and take a number preferences from Mr Deegan to threaten Mr Hogan but that has not eventuated.

"I am very humbled because to get given this gig by your community at any time is humbling, but we've been through a traumatic event, and we have a big job, so I'm very grateful and very humble," Mr Hogan told the Lismore App.

Mr Hogan and his team are celebrating at the Lismore Heights Sports Club where they have spent their time watching the count.

"We're obviously catching up tonight, acknowledging what we've done and acknowledging the fact that we've been given this gig by our community. I just said then (in his victory speech) that whoever became the Member for Page this time has a big job and a big responsibility because besides what you normally do and besides the fact you are looking to help your region prosper to get jobs and do the jobs that a federal government does, this one was a really personal one for me, a really personal win. The Member for Page, now it's me again, is responsible and has a big job in our flood recovery effort."

"I don't care what the colour of the government is federally, I don't care what the colour of the government is at a state level, I will leave no stone unturned, I will hassle every minister, every bureaucrat to make sure our flood recovery effort happens as quickly as it can. I see that as a prime responsibility in my role."

Will it make the task more difficult now that it is likely to be a Labour-led government, minority or majority?

"No, I don't think so. I think there is enough bipartisan support for our flood recovery effort, and I genuinely believe that. I won't be turning a blind eye to the same colour at the state level too. The state agencies are primarily responsible for this recovery."

"As I said this is personal. We all have family and friends who have had their houses damaged, had their businesses damaged and this is a really serious thing for us. It is a big responsibility of mine to make sure that no bureaucrats and no department gets in the way of this happening as quickly as possible."

In response to the fall of the LNP?

"I respect the wishes of the Australian public."

While Mr Hogan is celebrating tonight, it is bittersweet for Labor candidate Patrick Deegan who has tasted defeat in his second federal election but watches as his party will more than likely be forming government.

In a statement, Mr Deegan said, "I would like to congratulate Kevin Hogan for retaining the seat of Page in today’s election."

"It was clear throughout the pre-poll period and again today that Kevin has built a very strong personal brand in the region."

"While many people were unhappy with the Morrison Government, the people of Northern NSW have given Kevin strong endorsement to continue as their representative."

"I would like to thank all the volunteers and supporters who helped out on my campaign. You’re the best!"

"I wish Kevin Hogan all the best for the next term of government, and I hope that he can be a strong and persuasive advocate for our region."

Independent Hanabeth Luke had a very strong showing in her first federal election with a primary vote of 12.4% at the time of writing this story. Ms Luke could not be reached for comment.
