The ANZAC Day dawn service held in Lismore this morning has been declared a resounding success, with the largest crowd seen in many years.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Lismore Cenotaph in the early hours of the morning to honour the bravery and courage of those who served our country.
Lismore RSL sub-branch secretary Wilson McClelland said apart from a slight technical issue, it was an excellent service.
“Huge crowd here this morning, there were a record number of people marching, and probably one of the biggest dawn services I’ve actually seen,” he said.
“It is the most important day of the year on the calendar, and it was great to see so many people coming out to pay their respects.”
“This year the floods are still in our mind, especially for our members and the community of Lismore, but we still haven't got a place to call home. Arrangements have all been done from our homes, so it is good to see everything coming together on the day.”
The service included the laying of wreaths, the playing of the Last Post, and the Lismore High School choir sung the Supreme Sacrifice.
Following the Last Post, the Ode of Remembrance was read, as the sun began to rise over the crowd:
They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lismore City Council Mayor Steve Krieg, State Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin, and Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan were all in attendance.
The Lismore City Bowling Club was also at capacity for their annual breakfast with the veterans.
The North Lismore service will be held at 8am at the North Lismore War Memorial, Alexandra Parade.
