Premier Dominic Perrottet is back from paternity leave and is back in Lismore today to announce a $20,000 Back To Home grant for those affected by the record February 28 flood.

The grant will be broken down into two sections:

  • $15,000 grant to repair and refit damaged homes.
  • $5,000 for the replacement of essential household items (for owners and renters)

The Lismore App understands this sort of payment has never been made before such is the devastation of our unprecedented natural disaster. It will be offered to those that did not have their homes insured.

While the money will be welcome by local residents, however, for some it is nowhere near enough.

A local South Lismore resident who, like many, had his house inundated causing structural damage as well as household item destruction said this will go nowhere for him.

"It might be a simple kitchen and the five grand buy a fridge and a washing machine but if you need structural work done, the money will go nowhere. I do understand it will help some people and families get up and running."

When asked if he would participate in a buyback or land swap deal, he replied "Bloody oath, but does that mean I can't participate if I have received the $20,000?"

The Premier will hold a press conference at Southern Cross University later this afternoon after doing his walk around the CBD block with Deputy Premier Paul Toole, Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin and Mayor Steve Krieg.
