New check-in method means leave your smartphone at home

A new printed card for checking into public places is set to make it easier for elderly family members - or those who struggle with smartphones.

Service NSW is now offering a hardcopy Covid-19 check-in card. The card contains a unique QR code with your registered details and can be used for electronic sign-in at various businesses and public venues.

When you enter a COVID Safe business, a staff member scans your card and your visit to the premises is electronically recorded. If the business device is unable to read your QR code, the staff member will enter your details manually into the online web form. If that is not an option on the day due to internet access, you can always sign in via the old but trusted 'paper and pen' method.

Service NSW states online that the card provides an alternative check-in method for customers who don't have smartphones and/or those who are not comfortable using the Service NSW webform.

“We want to make sure the COVID-Safe check-in as safe and as accessible as possible, which is why we’re introducing the COVID-19 check-in card,” NSW Minister for Digital and Customer Service Victor Dominello said.

“The days of seeking out somewhere to manually sign in with pen and paper should be an absolute last resort.”

The Minister says he believes the card will make checking-in faster and safer and put an end to manual check-ins.

Belgin Tran, program director of project delivery and enterprise change at Service NSW, said that it was “not mandatory” for businesses to accept the COVID-19 check-in card.

“However, it’s highly recommended to enable quick and easy electronic registration,” Ms Tran said.

Reaction to the check-in card has been mixed on social media with many people unsure how the card will work and some accusing the government of interfering in people’s lives.

Customers will be able to register for their COVID-19 check-in card via the Service NSW website or by calling 137 788 and can opt to receive it via email to print at home, or via postal mail.

If you lose the card, or your contact details change, you simply create a new card.

Note that this check-in method is only available at businesses that have a QR compatible device.
