Lismore Cup's winning horse is on a winning streak

And today's Lismore Cup winner is....Tavion Prince. A five year old horse from Tamworth has won the annual Lismore Workers Club Lismore Cup.

Tavion Prince’s trainer, Craig Martin said he had travelled to Lismore from Tamworth for the race and that the horse had also won the Forster Tuncurry Cup two weeks ago.

Tavion Prince’s trainer, Craig Martin is handed the winning trophy by Lismore Turf Club Chair Mark Oaten.

“To win two country cups in a row is a good effort from any horse,” Craig said. “it’s about peaking at the right time in distance races.”

Tavion Prince was ridden by experienced jockey Andrew Gibbons– who has won both times he has ridden the horse.

Craig said now the Lismore Cup is over, he will head home and give Tavion Prince a well deserved rest.

“This is his fourth big trip away and it can take its toll so we’ll and give him a quiet week and then talk to the owners and reassess,” Craig said.

Craig said Tavion Prince, at five years old, is “a good age for a stayer”.

“He is a bit more mature and can handle it a lot better - and he will improve with age,” Craig said. “Next year he will be better.

“He got in good today with the weight half a kilo over the limit, next year he could be 16.5 kilos.

And the other winners were:

Second place: Top Prospect

Third place: Ready For Danger

Fourth place: Tiomo

Father and son

Lismore Turf Club Chair Mark Oaten said the jockeys on the two horses who came first and second place were ridden by jockeys who were father and son.

The father Andrew Gibbons, came first and his son Dillon came second.’

“This year we needed to get trainers from down south in NSW because the Queensland border was shut,” he said.

“We often get people from over the border from Queensland so it was a big push for us. I’m looking forward to it opening up again next year.”

Crowds were separated into Covid-controlled areas at the races.
