Southern Cross University is in lockdown this afternoon after reports of a gunman on campus.
Lecturer Marcelle Townsend-Cross said the alarms were “going off” in every area and building on campus with a recorded message saying ‘attention, attention, the university is in emergency lockdown’.
“We’ve all been told to stay inside,” Marcelle said. “We are in our classroom in Y-Block and apparently the person with the gun is in the plaza area near the library,” Marcelle said.
“We heard there was person cracking up with a gun at the library because friends and colleagues have been texting and facebooking each other here on campus.
“I arrived at uni for my 2pm class and someone told me not to go near the library and I was worried about my students,” she said.
“Apparently they are bringing in the police troops.
“We just need to wait until we are told we can go out.”
Lismore High and the nearby childcare centre, Blinkys, are also in lockdown.
The report of an armed person on campus has not been confirmed by authorities, but police are on their way to the university.
