Goonellabah FC beat Lismore Thistles 3-2 to record their first victory in Football Far North Coast's Premier League at Weston Park on Friday night.
It was Thistles second loss of the season and Coach Chris Layland knows that a victory is coming.
"Our team performance was good. Obviously I am disappointed with the result," said Layland.
"I thought we were the better team. It is only our second game, still early days."
Thistles goalkeeper Ben Albertini was playing his first Premier League match of the season and Layland said "he didn't have the best of games".
There was nothing he could do about the Hornets' first goal in the 12th minutes which was from captain Chris Charke off a corner routine perfected on the training game with Thistles' defenders not attacking the ball.
It remained one goal to the good for the Hornets at half-time and it looked like any side could still win.
Then defender Brady Toniello, back in the side, put Hornets two up with a cracker of a shot five minutes into the second half. Athistles defender had headed the ball to him off a cross.
"Brady's shot was an absolute cracker, hitting it hard off a volley," said Goonellabah FC Coach Michael Primiano. Layland thought Albertini should have got down to it on his near post.
Then Hornets' Wayne Gordon took advantage when Albertini kicked it straight to him and stayed off his line in the 64th minute.
"Gordo's lobbed the ball over as the goalkeeper was out of the box," said Primiano.
Thistles then came back into the match with full-back Jeremy Sullivan getting on the end of a cross for a fine finish with 13 minutes to go.
Thistles' striker Jye Wilson then scored a goal that he is only capable of. He weaved in between two defenders and took a pass, before firing it past Brad Robertson, who was in the Hornets' goal for the first time this season.
"Jye certainly gave Dan (Morrow) and Nelson (Cheli) a few headaches at times with his pacey runs but they kept him at bay for the majority of the time. He punished us when we gave him a sniff," said Primiano.
"All in all I was happy with the turnaround from our first two games and we will keep building from here."
