Motorists who have driven past Hepburn Park on Oliver Avenue in Goonellabah would have seen a large crane making its way slowly around the perimeter replacing lighting on the well-used community park.
It was nearly twelve months ago that State Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin welcomed $499,425 in funding for the lighting to be vastly improved through LED globes which will also save local clubs funding due to the significant reduced power consumption.
“Hepburn Park is one of the most utilised sporting facilities in Lismore for sports that already enjoy high participation rates from women and girls, such as touch football, hockey, fitness classes and challenges,” Ms Saffin said at the time.
“It will also create well-lit spaces that are not only much safer and accessible for all participants but will also greatly improve the inclusion and equity for women and girls.”
Lismore City Council told the Lismore App, "Lismore City Council is currently upgrading lighting at Hepburn Park in alignment with a keen focus on efficiency, quality, sustainability and safety for the city.
"The upgrades are designed to improve the quality and life of the assets and slash the costs of operating while also delivering on community safety.
"The new LED lights provide almost double the brightness as the existing lighting while reducing power consumption by 60 per cent.
"Council is not compromising on quality for the city, with two new steel light poles currently being installed near the dog park, and steel posts replacing the existing wooden posts throughout the rest of the park to maximise resilience and longevity of these important assets.
"The work, which weather permitting is scheduled to be complete by this week, and will not only benefit park users but, importantly, improve safety at night with contained light spilling onto nearby pathways."
