While it was nice to see and feel the sun's rays yesterday, the rain makes a return today signalling the start of a three-day patch of unsettled weather that could see heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for Lismore and the Northern Rivers.
Patch Clapp from the Bureau of Meteorology told the Lismore App there is the risk of heavy or even intense falls later in the week around Northern NSW and South East Queensland after a bit of a lull day today.
"We're seeing a deepening surface level trough, so a low-pressure trough, and it's going to deepen over the coming days. This front and trough that's made it through the state today is going to linger and then deepen later in the week and it's going to tap into some extra support and energy from an upper-level trough as well."
"That gives it a little bit of a boost, so that means we're looking at widespread rainfall potential and could be looking at fairly widespread 30 to 50 millimetre falls and certainly up to 100 millimetres won't be out of the question."
Patch explained that there may still be some shower and storm activity for today (Wednesday) but the shower/storm activity really picks up as we get into Thursday.
"Late morning and then into the afternoon we will see a fairly typical Wednesday (weather) activity but then that may carry on sort of overnight and add into Thursday morning where we'll see that continuation of heavier rainfall."
"So, it could be a little bit more widespread than just a little bit of that hit-and-miss set-up of a typical summer storm activity."
Unfortunately, the drying days won't start until Sunday.
"We're expecting a kind of a southern movement of that system as we get towards the weekend, but we're likely to see that shower and potentially storm activity carry through Saturday, maybe some showers lingering into Sunday but then clearing once we get through the weekend."
While the Queensland side of the border should receive more rainfall than northern NSW, there could well be some thunderstorm warnings released by The Bureau on Thursday and Friday.
