Goonellabah Workers Sports have gone to the top of the table after a low-scoring LJ Hooker League victory at Oakes Oval on Saturday.
After wet weather wreaked havoc on Round 15 of the LJ Hooker League, ground staff worked hard to get Oakes Oval playable on Saturday morning, and the match between Goonellabah and Lennox Head was able to be played.
Lennox Head won the toss and elected to bowl, seeing a little moisture in the pitch and looking to exploit this early.
It seemed to pay off early, with Jack Cooper (5) falling early and Goonellabah being 3/34 after the loss of Blake Perkins (12) and Ben Cooper (0) in consecutive balls.
Tom Standish was able to steady the ship to a degree, top scoring with 42, but wickets continued to fall around him, with Nathan Bezrouchko the only batsman in the lower order to reach double figures with 22.
Lennox eventually bowled Goonellabah out for 115 in the 36th over.
Goonellabah were positive after seeing what the pitch was doing and reaped the rewards early, with opening bowlers Reece Gregor and Michael German setting the tone early.
The two bowlers ripped through the Pirates top order, having Lennox in all sorts of trouble at 7/21 after Gregor took 4/24 off 6 overs and German proved hard to get away, taking 3/11 off 8 overs.
No Lennox batsman had reached double figures before Andrew Lindsay (22) and Jacob Palmer (24) added some respect to the scoreboard before Alec Watson (1/19), Brady Toniello (1/6) and Ben Cooper (1/24) finished off the innings.
Goonellabah bowling the Pirates out in the 26th over for 85.
The victory takes Goonellabah to the top of the LJ Hooker League ladder with other results going their way across the weekend.
Tintenbar East Ballina's win over Tweed Banora Colts sees Goonellabah ahead of Tintenbar on quotient on 78 points, Tweed in third with 72 points, Cudgen, who were washed out on Saturday are sitting in fourth onn66 points and Terranora Lakes are biting at their heals for fourth spot, sitting just behind in fifth on 63 points.
Maris Brothers match against Alstonville was abandoned due to the state of the pitch after the wet week.
Next Saturday, Round 16 sees Marist Brothers host Pottsville at Oakes Oval and Goonellabah Workers Sports travel north to play Cudgen.
