Goonellabah edge closer to the top

Goonellabah Workers Sports have edged closer to the top of the LJ Hooker League ladder after a big win over Casino on Saturday.

The win and league leaders Tweed Banora losing to Pottsville sees Goonellabah equal on points and just narrowly behind on quotient.

The Casino Cavaliers won the toss and elected to bat, getting off to a solid start, losing their first wicket with the score at 59.

Goonellabah were then able to take regular wickets, to have Casino all out for 124 in the 30th over.

Jack Cooper was the best of the bowlers with 4/28, Alec Watson continued his run of wickets with 3/22 and Ben Cooper and Reece Gregor both picked up a wicket each.

In reply, Goonellabah stumbled early, losing Blake Perkins and Jack Cooper to be 2/20, before big hitting from Kevin Warid and Ben Cooper sealed the win.

Warid finished with 60 off 31 balls, including 2 sixes and 7 fours, and Cooper added 46 off 30 balls, which included 8 fours and a six.

Goonellabah passed the Casino total in the 14th over.

The victory takes GWS to 71 points and a quotient of 1.459, with Tweed equal on points and a quotient of 1.472.

In the twilight match at Oakes Oval, Marist Brothers went down to Tintenbar East Ballina.

Tintenbar won the toss and elected to bat, with Brothers bowling the visitors out in the final over for 174.

Tom Molloy starred with the ball, taking 5/36 off 7.3 overs, and captain Brendan Mitchell finished with 3/20.

The run chase didn't start well for Brothers, losing openers Pat Martin (2) and Israr ul Mabood (5) early before Cooper Williams (37) and Joe Parsons (35) steadied the innings.

Sam Cottee added 24, and Tom Parsons (34 not out) tried in vain to reach the target, but Brothers eventually fell 9 runs short at 8/165.

Next week Brothers will travel to Alstonville and Goonellabah will host Lennox Head at Oakes Oval.
