Each year, midwives at Lismore Base Hospital are given a boost to their education and learning thanks to a scholarship honouring a past midwife, Dorothy Edwards.
Dorothy’s husband, Noel Edwards, generously established the annual memorial Award and financial scholarship, which are also supported by Our Kids.
This year, Gaynor Knight has been awarded the Dorothy Edwards Midwife of the Year award for her dedication and passion for midwifery, commitment to woman-centered care and to continuing her education.
“Gaynor is a skilled midwife, and she’s also committed to educating others through fetal safety education and infection control to help our patients and staff stay safe,” Amber Dalby, Acting Midwifery Manager Lismore Base Hospital said.
“Gaynor is a deserving winner of the award and the $2000 scholarship, and we are so thankful to have her as part our team here at Lismore.”
The Early Career Midwife of the Year award went to Karly Brown, recognised for being proactive, motivated, and contributing to a positive workplace culture, as well as bringing a passion for woman-centred care beyond her years of experience.
“It’s great to have newly graduated midwives working alongside our more experienced staff, because they keep us on our toes, encourage us to look with fresh eyes, and bring a great energy. Karly is a wonderful addition to our unit and a great advocate for women in our care,” Ms Dalby said.
The Lismore team also celebrated two long-standing nurses for their many years of dedication and commitment – Kerri Carter, having notched up 35 years of nursing and midwifery, and Maureen Edwards, an incredible 50 years of nursing and midwifery.
