State Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin, Member for Tweed Geoff Provest, Member for Ballina Tamara Smith, Member for Clarence Richie Williamson and the Mayors of the seven local councils in the Northern Rivers have sent a joint letter to Premier Chris Minns about Tranche Two Funding for the Resilient Homes Program.
The letter reads:
The letter is a result of the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation decreasing the number of homes that will be made offers of a House Buyback from an initial estimate of 2000 to only 1,100 this week.
The first Tranche of $700 million was never enough to achieve the goal that the program was set up for, to move high-risk-to-life people out of the floodplain or raise their homes to a safer level plus retrofit homes so owners can move back in quicker when the next flood hits the Northern Rivers.
As negotiations are at the peak of the program with the aim to inform 6,471 registered people of their program eligibility by June 30, time is of the essence.
Ms Saffin told the Lismore App she and Mayor Steve Krieg spoke to the Premier last night.
"The letter speaks for itself. Having four state MPs and seven Mayors sign it is pretty powerful. The Premier listen to us closely and said can you leave it with me and I'll come back to you soon."
"He is aware that we need Tranche 2 funding and he's aware of the urgency."
As a community with its most vulnerable in limbo, we hope the response is immediate.
