Lismore's Under-16's boys hockey team has returned from the NSW State Championships last weekend with heads held high.
The team was able to secure an impressive third-place finish in Division 2 against some of the toughest competition in the state, at the tournament held in Orange in cold conditions.
Representing the Far North Coast region, the team came up against squads from Sydney, Wagga Wagga, Metro South and Bathurst.
They proved that talent and determination can thrive in regional communities. Notably, the team had the furthest distance to travel to the championships—an effort that paid off and brought the team closer together.
Hugh Marshall scored prolifically throughout the tournament and was praised by selectors for his leadership and skill. His efforts throughout the tournament resulted in selection in the NSW State squad.
Coach Daniel Hughes and assistant coach Mark Harris guided the team with strategic insight and unwavering support, while team manager Crystal Hughes played a vital role both on and off the field—coordinating logistics, supporting players, and helping the team stay focused and prepared in the lead-up to the event.
The team consisted of players from East Lismore Hockey Club, Northern Star Hockey Club, Coraki and Ballina. who proudly represented Far North Coast. Their contribution highlights the strength of local hockey development and the importance of community clubs in nurturing young talent.
"This result is a huge achievement for our region," said Daniel Hughes. "The boys showed incredible heart and discipline. To come third in the state and beat teams from much larger areas is something we'll all remember for a long time."
