Some of Far North Coast Hockey's finest players are competing for Australian against New Zealand in the Trans Tasman Tournament being played on the Gold Coast.


The event sees seven men's and women's teams, from over 35s to over 65s, taking on their counterparts from New Zealand in a bestøf three competition.


The female Far North Coast players competing are Renee Dunstan (Over 35s), Tracey Makings, Janelle Pitman (Over 45s), Tracy Bradford (Over50), Karen Iwanuscha and Jan Sault (Over 55) and Janis Hutton (Over 65).


The male Far North Coast players taking part are Brett Crawford (Over 40), Dave Brown, Simon Brown, Grant Smith (over 45), Chris Clark (Over 50), Bob Barratt (Over 55) and Neil Chaseling, Warren Jenkins, Paul Leadbetter (Over 60s).


Also flying the flag for Far North Coast Hockey are Marlene Turvey, the manager of the women's Over 40s team; massage therapist Kim Chappell and statistician/videographer Helen Rankin Jarvie.


The Trans Tasman Tournament began yesterday after an official opening ceremony, with a Welcome to Country by Luther Cora.


The first match at 11am saw New Zealand beat Australia 1-0 in the 55+ women. But the nation's men's 60+ team squared the tournament, winning 2-1. By the end of the first day of four, Australia led New Zealand 17 points to five. Former FNC player Brad Mathers, who plays in Brisbane, scored twice for the victorious Over 40s side.
