Far North Coast Baseball's Senior League team travelled to Newcastle over the long weekend, competing in its first NSW Country State Championship.
Although the team was plagued by injuries in the lead up to the competition, the team led by a number of talented senior players and supported by a group of youngsters stepping up, held their own against the state's best to showcase the talent that the Far North Coast region has to offer.
Suffering heartbreaking losses early in the tournament, losing two games by one run after holding the lead going into the last inning, Far North Coast stepped up on the last day to defeat the previously unbeaten Newcastle team in commanding fashion 8-0.
Far North Coast established their strength early in the game displaying the determination and grit that the region's baseball teams are renowned for.
"George Cooper got the start for FNC, allowing only one hit and one walk through four innings with Jayden Battese closing the game, also allowing only walk for his inning of work," said FNC Baseball Senior League Head Coach Jason Bromell.
"Newcastle went on to win the tournament with our boys the only ones to put a chink in their armour."
A number of players in this side will be competing in the Gold Coast competition over the summer as a means of improvement and development.
"Congratulations to George Cooper, Jayden Battese and Liam Weekes, who have all been selected in the NSW state squad to potentially compete at the Australian National tournament in January," added Bromell.
