Flood Feb 2022 end of day 1: your questions answered

The latest information from the Bureau of Meteorology shows Wilsons River is at 14.3 metres and steady. The Lismore gauge has stopped reporting since Monday early afternoon. The Browns Ck Pump Station gauge can be used to estimate the level of the Richmond River at Lismore.

(The CBD from Girards Hill)

A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for the Northern Rivers including Lismore. The BoM says further rises are possible.

The rain gauge has also stopped working at the Lismore Airport since 3:30am so total rainfall for Lismore since then is unknown at this stage. Nimbin recorded 78mm since 9am.

The BoM is forecasting a day with little rain (0 to 1mm), however, there is still the chance of heavy rain tonight. As has been the case with this trough, things can change easily.

The Lismore App has received many questions throughout Monday, we have done our best to answer those we can?

When will the electricity be switched on?

This is all about safety. Essential Energy has said there are 8,760 customers without power and some may be for several days. When the floodwaters subside Essential Energy will have to physically inspect all the transformers in the CBD, if they have any water in them they need to be dried before any part of the electricity grid can be switched on. This can be done part area by area.

Why did it take so long to get through to 000 and the SES?

Simply put, lack of resources appears to be the answer. Calls were made and improvements happened, however, this is one area that looks to be underestimated by the state government.

How can I help?

The two evacuation centres are full. We can't estimate the number of people but the estimates are 500+ in each venue. Mattresses, blankets, towels, toiletries, personal hygiene and bottle water are on the items that are most needed.

What financial help can I get?

More information will be arriving in the coming days for northern NSW, however, SE Queensland people is an example where people can apply for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment. This is a lump-sum payment of:

  • $1,000 for eligible adults
  • $400 for each eligible child under the age of 16.

How can I find out if my loved one is safe?

The Red Cross opened Register.find.re-unite website so people can register themselves while loved ones can search a name to see if they are safe. Click on the https://register.redcross.org.au/ link.
