First COVID case confirmed in regional NSWThe new Goulburn Hospital under construction.

The first NSW regional centre has been affected by the Sydney COVID clusters following an essential worker travelling to the city of Goulburn.

It is understood the essential worker travelled from South Sydney to work on a construction site for the new Goulburn Hospital. It has led to the NSW Government opening a pop-up testing site in the town.

This case proves how easily the Delta variant can spread into regional NSW and if we are not careful, can put a city, town or the entire state into lockdown.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said, "What's happened with the regional cases is a clear example of why we have put restrictions in place for regional NSW."

With Police increasing their compliance checking residents across NSW are being urged to stick to the restrictions which include mandatory mask-wearing at all indoor venues, mandatory QR check-in and limits on visitors numbers in homes.

People who move between Greater Sydney into the regions to work are being asked to have weekly Covid tests.

All eyes will be on Goulburn in the coming days to see how much the virus has spread.

You can be assured that Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will be monitoring the situation closely and preparing for a border closure.

Across the state up until 8pm last night, NSW recorded 89 local acquired cases, down from 112 yesterday, with 21 infectious in the community. Another four cases were found in overseas arrivals. 49,055 tests were conducted in that 24-hour period.

A man in his 70s has sadly died in a Sydney hospital from Covid 19, 65 people are in hospital with 21 in ICU.

“We need to get that number down [of infectious in the community] to as close to zero as possible. Almost three-quarters of those were close family contacts,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

“Every time you go outside and do the wrong thing you risk bringing Covid home to your family.

“If you live in the Fairfield LGA please do not go to work unless you have to, and if you do, you must have a Covid test every three days,” she said.

“One day is not a trend. The numbers will bounce around.”

NSW CHO Kerry Chant says the Delta variant spreads fast across family members.

“A household of seven people are infected, a household of five people and seven households of three people are all infected and it has spread at a very rapid rate,” she said.

“Please wear a mask, shop purposely, keep your distance and do not act socially with any others when in the public,” she said.

“Anyone over 60, please pick up the phone and call your GP and get vaccinated.”

Dr Chant confirmed there are young people in ICU that have no underlying conditions.

“Young people can get ill. Please talk to your health adviser about getting vaccinated.

Later today, the Premier and Prime Minister Scott Morrison will announce funding to help businesses and the community affected by the lockdown.
