An investigation is underway after a fatal crash on the M1 in the Tweed Shire this morning.
About 9.30am (Monday, 11 August 2025), emergency services were called to the M1 at Mooball – about 13km north of Mullumbimby – following reports of a crash.
At the scene, police were told several vehicles had collided with a man in the southbound lanes of the motorway. The man died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
Officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The southbound lanes of the M1 have been closed, and diversions are in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and delay non-essential travel.
Live Traffic has diversions in place:
Light vehicles: Can use Cudgera Creek Rd, Pottsville Rd, Tweed Coast Rd and Wooyung Rd to rejoin M1 Pacific Mtwy.
Heavy vehicles (up to 26m B-Doubles) Have been approved to use Tweed Valley way via Murwillumbah to join the M1 Pacific Mtwy at Yelgun **Vehicles larger than 26m B-Doubles and OSOM movements will be parked.
