Businesses on Terania Street, North Lismore will have somewhat of a smile on their faces this morning, now that the road detour near the Italo Club is open for traffic.
The Pine Street, Crane Street, and Tweed Street detour can now be used by all traffic to get around the Terania Street Rail Bridge, which has been closed since September 22.
Transport for NSW has indicated the necessary safety work should be completed by mid-November so normal traffic flow can begin once again.
The Lismore App was informed by Member for Lismore Janelle Saffin that a walkway has opened under the Terania Street Rail Bridge today allowing pedestrian access along Terania Street.
While the new access will be welcome by many residents and businesses along Terania Street, the end game is to try and remove the heritage-listed rail bridge and four others around Lismore to avoid this kind of closure in the future and for safety reasons.
The process is not a simple one given the bureaucracy involved and unless a commonsense solution is found could take between two and three years to complete.
