CSIRO interim report is released today

The long wait for the CSIRO interim report is over as Federal Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt will hold a press conference to give details contained in the report.

The CSIRO handed over the report to NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) on 30 November 2022 with residents of Lismore and the Northern Rivers anxious to read what the initial findings are and what will be implemented to help reduce the impact when the next major flood hits our region in terms of human loss and damage cost.

The Lismore App understands a high-tech warning system will be prioritised.

This was a major failure during the February 28 megaflood when inadequate warning measures gave residents and business owners no real understanding of the size and scale of what was to come.

A comprehensive flood gauge, information and communication network should mean zero loss of lives rather than the five that occurred in 2022.

This first tranche of the $150 million worth of short-term projects including basic flood mitigation works around drainage will not have the larger infrastructure work that people are waiting for until the whole of catchment report is completed in May 2024.

More to come following the announcement by Minister Watt this afternoon.
